Reese Witherspoon made her name playing the all-American girl in films like Pleasantville, the critically acclaimed Election, and the scatty-but-adorable lead in Legally Blonde before winning an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in Walk The Line.

Her new film is This Means War, an action comedy in which she plays a woman caught in a love triangle between two best friends (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy), who also happen to be CIA agents.

“I thought it was definitely a departure, and also an opportunity to be in an action film,” she said when asked why she took on the project.

“I hadn’t really done that and I thought that if I was ever going to do an action film I’d want it to have elements of comedy in it, so it was kind of perfect.

“Those are the action films I like, Mr & Mrs Smith, Bad Boys, Beverly Hills Cop, movies that make you laugh but also deliver action.”

She’s not been as prolific on-screen in recent years, but the 35-year-old mother of two insists this is not due to a lack of passion.

“I’m just very discerning about what I like - I’m really picky,” she explained.

“Also, I have two kids so that takes up a lot of time, and I want to be with them. If I see something I want to do or something that’s a totally different challenge for me, then I’m in.”

Internet dating features prominently in this movie, and although Witherspoon is a happily married lady she can see the attraction.

“I have to say that if I was dating, and if I could zip off my face, my ‘famous costume’, and be who I really am - I would totally do that,” she revealed.

“I’d be interested to see what people are doing and what people are out there. Lives are so busy and disconnected and I don’t know how you meet people if you’re not internet dating.”

In the movie she is in the enviable position of having two of Hollywood’s most desired leading men chasing her on screen - but has she ever had two men fighting over her in real life?

“Maybe my husband and my son fighting for my attention! Reese! Mom! Reese! Mom! Reese! Mom!,” she laughed.

“Other than that, I don’t date multiple people at once - there’s too much lying involved. I’m just not a liar.”

Always willing to lend her celebrity for a good cause, and Reese stepped out for 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters in Washington DC on Tuesday (February 28).

The “This Means War” beauty looked fabulous in a short black belted three-quarter length v-neck dress and heels as she posed for pictures ahead of the 2012 Avon Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women ceremony.

As an ambassador for Avon, Witherspoon is there to present the Breaking Silence award, which is given to an organization that puts out a message encouraging members of its community to speak out against violence toward women.

Keeping herself immersed in the spotlight as her new movie “This Means War” was released this weekend, Reese was on-hand for the 62nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards in Beverly Hills on Saturday night (February 18).

Held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, the 35-year-old actress was among the presenters as she joined alongside editor Kevin Tent to dote “The Descendants” director Alexander Payne with the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor.

Reese, Tom & Chris talk "This Means War" and their real-life competition

Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy star in the action comedy “This Means War” and sat down with OnTheRedCarpet.com to discuss and joke about their real life rivalry.

Witherspoon, 35, stars in the film with Pine and Hardy. The actors play two CIA agents who are best friends fighting over the same woman, played by Witherspoon. The agents wage an epic battle against one another while Witherspoon’s character tries to determine which man is a better match for her.

While their characters competed on the big screen, they joked that it carried on in their real lives too.

“Oh yeah,” Pine responded when asked if the rivalry was real. “[There were] a lot of games of Go Fish off set, just you know, Old Maid, Scrabble, Words with Friends…Cribbage, Mahjong.”

Pine and Hardy were also open about transitioning from their more action-inspired roles in “Star Trek” and “The Dark Knight” to a more light-hearted comedy.

“I enjoyed it very much,” Pine said. “I liked the fact that we had a great script that Simon Kinberg had worked on and gave us, but really the fun of it was getting to know people and kind of working off one another, taking our cue off of Chelsea Handler…She is fun to watch.

“Yeah, it’s really nice to do something where I’m not taking myself too seriously and just have light banter,” Hardy added. “I really can’t help but to default switch to being really serious about stuff. I have a lot of fun laughing, which I do normally on other films anyway, but on this I think a lot more in this aspect, with that hysterical laughter. It’s almost a little bit out of my comfort zone, but I really enjoyed it.”

The film was released on February 17 and also features comedian Chelsea Handler, actress Angela Bassett and Abigail Spencer.

Your character has to deal with these two guys…
REESE WITHERSPOON: I know, tough life. Tough life.

[There’s] all these things, where all these women out there are going to be going, “poor Reese.”
REESE WITHERSPOON: It’s just the perfect Valentine’s movie, you get to go see these two guys in the movie. There’s something in this movie for everybody. There’s romance, there’s action, there’s comedy…
CHRIS PINE: Chelsea Handler. She’s her own brand of comedy.

So, there’s a bit of a friendly competition between you two - because your characters, are in this competition, they have to kind of one up each other. Did you feel that on the set - like you weren’t going to let the other guy win?
CHRIS PINE: Yeah, a lot of games of Go Fish off set, just you know, Old Maid?, Scrabble, Words with Friends…
TOM HARDY: Cribbage. That’s an old school game.
CHRIS PINE: Cribbage, Mahjong.
REESE WITHERSPOON: Three Card Monty.
CHRIS PINE: Three Card Monty?
REESE WITHERSPOON: Sorry, they play it in Reno.
TOM HARDY: That’s a jail right? That’s a jail right? It’s for men - there’s not a female prison in Reno?
REESE WITHERSPOON: I wasn’t in prison! It’s a game, you can play it anywhere.

But there was a lot of boys will be boys in this movie - fighting over you. Is that all you saw on the script and thought ‘this is going to be fun,’ or…[did it] give you a little room?
REESE WITHERSPOON: I think that was the great thing about it was that we liked the script but there was a lot of room to improvise. So everybody kind of brought their own flavor of comedy to it, and it’s nice to see people’s personalities kind of emerge in the movie.

TOM HARDY: I think Shame was actually and I think Michael Fassbender got overlooked as well. I was really glad to see Gardy Oldman, and Nolte and Chastain up there.

Living in the glare of a media life can be a blinding reality, but not for Reese Witherspoon. As she enters her second decade as a major film star, the Southern-born beauty has evolved into the quintessential modern woman on her own terms and with identity intact. Now this Oscar winner’s incredibly diversified life is inspiring some bold choices beyond the juggling act, at least on screen. She’s tackling her first ever action film done in the classic Reese-style: starring as a woman at the center of a romantic battle in This Means War.

JORGE CARREON: We should have seen this coming. Reese Witherspoon, action star! It was cool to see you in this kind of film. Was that really you behind the wheel during that final car chase?
REESE WITHERSPOON: [LAUGHS] I have a tendency lately to be doing a lot of stunt work. I did all my stunt work on Water For Elephants, too. It was a big stunt year. Now I’m taking a break because I’m a little bit accident-prone. [SMILES]

CARREON: It is interesting to see you in what is generally a role played by men, that object of affection at the center of a battle.
WITHERSPOON: It’s a great fantasy for women to have two men fighting over you. I don’t know a better way to say it. I just think the idea that women are in control and able to choose over so many different aspects of their lives is a relatively new concept in femininity. We are the babies of the equal rights movement, so we are feeling the benefits of having the freedom of choice in many different areas. With everything that women experience, from having babies by themselves, having big careers, running companies and studios, I think women’s options are different now and in regards to who they choose to be their partners.

CARREON: Yet, we have yet to conquer the mysteries of successful dating and relationships. Why does that continue to engage us an audience to watch on screen?
WITHERSPOON: People have infinite hope for love and I think that’s great. It’s part of the human spirit. It’s what wakes you up in the morning. It’s what keeps you going. There’s always that possibility that something great is going to come into your life. I always believe that you never love in vain. Any kind of relationship or friendship you have in your life is meant to be there for a reason and just contributes to who you are as a soul. I think that’s part of it. We feel hopeful. I think there’s a real hopefulness in the movie, too.

CARREON: The film does have a challenging moral issue in this age of confused conservatism, though. Is a “sexual tiebreaker” ever really a good idea in choosing between two men?
WITHERSPOON: [LAUGHS] When we were trying to figure out what we were going to do about whether she was going sleep with these guys or not sleep with these guys, it was very difficult. Out there it’s a totally new world. I got married when I was 22 the first time and I’m married again. I don’t have an extensive knowledge of dating or relationships, so I was asking my single fiends. I was talking to other people who were working on the movie and I think we came up with a nice sort of balance of what is too much in a new relationship. You get to see her sort of tortured by it, too, which is great. She’s crazy about both these guys, she doesn’t know if she should sleep with them, all that kind of stuff.

CARREON: We should only have the kind of dates you enjoy with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy on screen. Have you ever had a really memorable date?
WITHERSPOON: I’ve had great dates in my life. I’ve been really lucky. I had one incredible birthday where somebody did a treasure hunt for me. I had to go all over the city. It was really special.

CARREON: After reaching such a career high with winning an Oscar for Walk the Line, are you more concerned about the perception of your career choices? Is there something that you still want to essay on screen?
WITHERSPOON: I think it comes less from creating some sort of legacy, really. It’s just things I connect to. I think more in my life now, I’ve been connecting to where I’m from, my culture and my heritage. I’m almost having that moment of wanting to go home a little bit and tell more stories from a Southern perspective. There’s so much heartbreak and so much joy in that environment. I loved The Help. I thought that was such an inspiring film and that gets to my heart because it’s really where I’m from, that area. I look forward to doing more films like that.

CARREON: Do you find nurturing a successful career or home life as being the bigger challenge?
WITHERSPOON: Name a woman who isn’t juggling a million things at one time? I’m just like everybody else, just a working mom. I’m lucky that I get periods of time where I have breaks and then I have periods of time where I’m very busy. My children are sort of acclimated to it now, but yeah, do I wish there was another me? Yes. Do I wish just to take care of all the day to day stuff? All the things that slip through the cracks, all those teacher gifts you wish you had bought, all those personal letters you wish you had written, that are like sitting in your mind? Yeah. But, I’m on the good side of the struggle, so I’m happy. It’s nice to have a full life and to watch my kids growing up and thriving. It’s a wonderful thing.

92% Election (1999) Smart, scathing and funny, this film about a high school teacher working on student elections, directed by Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”), blends biting satire with surprisingly thoughtful comedy and solid performances from stars Matthew Broderick as the teacher and Witherspoon as an overachieving student.

89% The Man in the Moon (1991) It’s sentimental, and some viewers may feel manipulated by the melodramatic final act, but this finely drawn coming-of-age story set in 1957 Louisiana boasts an excellent cast - including Witherspoon in her film debut.

86% Pleasantville (1998) Filled with lighthearted humor, timely social commentary and dazzling visuals, this inventive film in which two 1990s teenagers (Tobey Maguire and Witherspoon) find themselves living in a 1950s sitcom is an artful blend of subversive satire and well-executed Hollywood formula.

67% American Psycho (2000) If it falls short of the deadly satire of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, this film still finds its own blend of horror and humor, thanks to a creepy performance by Christian Bale and a strong supporting cast, including Witherspoon as the killer’s girlfriend.

61% Water for Elephants (2011) It’s a tale tastefully told, beautifully filmed, and Witherspoon as the wife of a brutal circus animal trainer (Christoph Waltz) is charming as always. But the film suffers from a pronounced lack of chemistry between its leads (Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson).

59% Twilight (1998) Its deliberate pace is frustrating, but this mystery thriller directed by Robert Benton (“Kramer vs. Kramer”), with nuanced performances from Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon and Witherspoon to fall back on, can’t help but be compelling.

Gracious and excited to interact with her fans in this exclusive iVillage chat, the Oscar winner — who looks as petite and lovely in person as she does on screen — was candid and funny as she opened up about her career and life. Here are some of the highlights from our sitdown:

On her friendship with Chelsea Handler: I know that doesn’t sound like her personality, but she’s really a great friend. She’s the kind of person that’ll cancel all her plans if you’re in a bad mood and you just want to sit on the couch and watch a movie. And she always organizes a Super Bowl party or and invites everybody. She’s really generous that way too. She likes to give a lot of good gifts.

On her menagerie of animals at home: I have three dogs, I have two horses, I have 21 chickens and I have two goats — oh it goes on — I have two donkeys and I have two pigs named Booker T. Washington and Valentine, Lavender Valentine.

On her family life: I have a pretty normal life, outside of what I do for a living which is kind of crazy and I travel a lot and I get to go on talk shows and all that kind of fun stuff. I have a pretty regular life. I get the kids off to school in the morning and I go to work at my office and pick them up from school and hang out. And we like to cook and jump on the trampoline a lot. My daughter and I are obsessed with the trampoline and my son and I like to throw the football around or we’ll play basketball in the driveway and that’s pretty much it. We watch The Voice a lot. Like all the singers, I get excited when they get chosen.

On staying in shape: I’m just always interested in being healthy, so I exercise even if I have a really early call at work. I’ll get up really early and exercise even if I only get on like a treadmill for 30 minutes. It’s good, it wakes me up, it makes me feel better. And you know I’m lucky I get to stay in hotels that have a gym in them. It makes it a lot easier.

On her domestic-violence work: I’m really excited about the work that I’ve been doing campaigning to end domestic violence. I think it’s something that people don’t talk about very much and it’s something that affects one in three women worldwide. And when you think about that, that’s somebody you know. That’s your mother, that’s your sister, that’s your girlfriend; it’s somebody in your life. So just getting people to talk about it and feel freer about coming forward and pressing charges is, it’s actually been really meaningful to me to be able to give back to so many people.

On her role models: Probably two people would be my grandmother because my mom worked a lot. She’d pick me up after school, help me with my homework and she’d always read books to me and taught me to love reading. She was a schoolteacher and she just was a real lady, she just carried herself beautifully and taught me to really respect myself. And then probably my mom. She always had three jobs. She was a teacher and she was a nurse and she just an incredibly giving, caring person.

On being a “stay-at-home mom”: I only do one movie a year so that’s about three months out of the year and the rest of the time I’m kind of a stay-at-home mom. I have an office so I go to the office while the kids are at school. But I just, I go to the basketball game and the horseback riding competitions and all that kind of stuff and I really enjoy being a parent. It’s a real grounding experience and you know, I like the other parents. It’s fun.

On her love of scary movies: I love scary movies! I watch a lot of scary movies but nobody else in my house wants to watch them so I watch them by myself. Especially American Horror Story, that TV show, that new one that’s so scary? I love it! I’d love to do something like when Nicole Kidman did that movie The Others, that was a real period kind of movie. I think that would be really great.

On women she admires: Marian Wright Edelman is one of the foremost advocates for children’s rights in America. I love Gloria Steinem, I think she’ incredible. I’m loving (New York) Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, I think she’s got incredible things to say and is working on some really interesting initiatives. I look at many people’s careers, Holly Hunter, and Frances McDormand, and Diane Keaton, women who’ve really had long and wonderful careers where they create great characters and just seem to be endlessly interesting and fascinating to watch.

On beauty versus brains: I would have to go with brains, you know. Beauty fades. Being smart is forever.

Reese headed to Chicago to pick up film award

Reese Witherspoon is planning a summer visit to Chicago.

The Oscar-winning actress is this year’s recipient of the Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award and will come pick it up on June 23. As part of the program, she’ll look back on her career in an interview conducted by Alexander Payne, director of her 1999 breakout film “Election.”

Payne is nominated for the best director Academy Award for “The Descendants,” and Witherspoon’s film “This Means War” opens Friday.

The benefit dinner for the Film Center will take place at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, 160 E. Pearson, and tickets range from $400 to $1,000 (312-846-2072).
